In “The House on Mango Street,” there is a chapter that really surprises me because it barely does happen. On page 14 of Our Good Day, Esperanza gives her experience of getting her first longtime friend. “If you give me five dollars I will be your friend forever.” Lucy says to Esperanza in their first meet. People like these are using others to get what they want. In the book, Lucy wants to buy a bike. Giving in, Esperanza gets a friend for the price of five dollars. At the end though, the friends are all riding on the bike together. Zipping through the streets, Esperanza has the time of her life. In life, I learned a valuable lesson where money can’t buy you happiness, but I guess it doesn’t.
