In The House on Mango Street, the chapter “Hips (Don’t  Lie)” shows Esperanza and her friends jumping rope and discussing what hips mean. Esperanza’s friends think that hips have a certain meaning. Nenny,  however, thinks differently.

Esperanza is stuck on whether she should side with her friends or her sister. She chooses to side with her sister Nenny and backs her up with a scientific explanation on hips. At the end of it all, Nenny repeats old rhymes while jumping and it embarrasses Esperanza, more than she already was.
